Microbial diversity of soils on the banks of the Solimões and Negro rivers, state of Amazonas, Brazil Genet. Mol. Biol.
Santos,Ellen Karla Nobre dos; Honda,Rubens Tomio; Nozawa,Sérgio Ricardo; Ferreira-Nozawa,Monica Stropa.
Analysis of bacterial diversity in soils along the banks of the Solimões and Negro rivers, state of Amazonas, Brazil, was by partial sequencing of the genes codifying the rDNA16S region. Diversity of operational taxonomic units (OTU) and of the divergent sequences obtained were applied in comparative analysis of microbiological diversity in the two environments, based on richness estimators and OTU diversity indices. The higher OTU diversity in the Solimões was based on the higher number of parameters that evoke this. The interaction between the nucleotide sequences of bacteria inhabiting the two riverine environments indicated that the two microrganism communities are similar in composition.

Miniature catfishes of the genus Gelanoglanis (Siluriformes: Auchenipteridae): monophyly and the description of a new species from the upper rio Tapajós basin, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Calegari,Bárbara B.; Reis,Roberto E.; Vari,Richard P..
Previously proposed synapomorphies for the genus Gelanoglanis of the catfish family Auchenipteridae are evaluated and four additional features involving the relationship between the mesethmoid and premaxilla, the very fleshy anterior portion of the snout, the lack of ossification of the second through fourth infraorbitals, and the incomplete poring of the lateral line are hypothesized as synapomorphic for the members of the genus. A new species of Gelanoglanis is described based on a series of specimens collected in the rio Teles Pires, a tributary of the rio Tapajós in the southern reaches of the Amazon basin. The new species demonstrates a number of features unusual within Gelanoglanis including a fontanel bordered by the frontals, a particularly...

Modeling the impact of net primary production dynamics on post-disturbance Amazon savannization Anais da ABC (AABC)
SENNA,MÔNICA C.A.; COSTA,MARCOS H.; DAVIDSON,ERIC A.; NOBRE,CARLOS A..
Amazon tropical forests are being replaced by pasturelands and croplands, but they sometimes revert to regrowth forest when abandoned after a period of agricultural use. Research suggests that this secondary regrowth is limited by climate and nutrient availability and, using a coupled biosphere-atmosphere model, we investigated patterns in the regrowth of the Amazon rainforest after a full deforestation event, considering different types of nutrient stress. We found that, over a 50 year regrowth period, the reduction of precipitation caused by large-scale deforestation was not sufficient to prevent secondary forest regrowth, but this decrease in precipitation combined with nutrient limitation, due to logging and frequent fires, did indeed prevent forest...

Modelling Amazonian forest eddy covariance data: a comparison of big leaf versus sun/shade models for the C-14 tower at Manaus I. Canopy photosynthesis Acta Amazonica
Mercado,Lina; Lloyd,Jon; Carswell,Fiona; Malhi,Yadvinder; Meir,Patrick; Nobre,Antonio Donato.
In this study, we concentrate on modelling gross primary productivity using two simple approaches to simulate canopy photosynthesis: "big leaf" and "sun/shade" models. Two approaches for calibration are used: scaling up of canopy photosynthetic parameters from the leaf to the canopy level and fitting canopy biochemistry to eddy covariance fluxes. Validation of the models is achieved by using eddy covariance data from the LBA site C14. Comparing the performance of both models we conclude that numerically (in terms of goodness of fit) and qualitatively, (in terms of residual response to different environmental variables) sun/shade does a better job. Compared to the sun/shade model, the big leaf model shows a lower goodness of fit and fails to respond to...

ABSTRACT Garcinia madruno (Kunth) Hammel is a neotropical tree that naturally occurs in terra firme forests and is important as a source of income and medicine for Amazonian populations. This study describes and compares the morphoanatomical responses of plants under conditions of stress and normoxia. Young plants of Garcinia madruno were subjected to two water regimes: daily controlled irrigation and waterlogged for 84 days. Hypertrophic lenticels, adventitious roots and anatomical characteristics of the roots and leaves were evaluated on days 0, 21, 42, 63 and 84. There were no changes in leaf structure, but cracks and hypertrophic lenticels appeared on the stems, there was an increase in blackness of the roots and the plants formed adventitious roots to...

BRANDÃO,Marcus Vinicius; SEBASTIÃO,Harley; KUNIY,Adriana Akemi; CAVALIERI,Soraya; GODOY,Leandro Perez.
ABSTRACT Monodelphis glirina is endemic to the Amazon and its life habits and natural history are poorly known. Data on the species were collected in northern Mato Grosso, Brazil, including observations on its behavior and simpatry with congeners. During 10 expeditions and with an effort of 3,680 buckets-day, 29 M. glirina, three M. saci and one M. emiliae individuals were captured. Adults accounted for 82.8% of M. glirina captures, with a sex ratio of three males for each female. Capture of young and lactating females was seasonal, as both were captured only in the rainy season. We observed three events of M. glirina preying on rodents in pitfall traps, all with the same feeding behavior. We also report an individual climbing a tree at night, including a...

O CONSUMO DE PRODUTOS AGROECOLÓGICOS NO ACRE AgEcon
Siviero, Amauri; Abreu, Lucimar Santiago; Mendes, Roberval; Gomes, Francisco Carlos Rocha.
On the influences of the El Niño, La niña and Atlantic Dipole Paterni on the Amazonian Rainfall during 1960-1998 Acta Amazonica
SOUZA,Everaldo B de; KAYANO,Mary T; TOTA,Julio; PEZZI,Luciano; FISCH,Gilberto; NOBRE,Carlos.
The influence of the large-scale climatic variability dominant modes in the Pacific and in the Atlantic on Amazonian rainfall is investigated. The composite technique of the Amazon precipitation anomalies is used in this work. The basis years for these composites arc those in the period 1960-1998 with occurrences of extremes in the Southern Oscillation (El Niño or La Niña) and the north/south warm (or cold) sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies dipole pattern in the tropical Atlantic. Warm (cold) dipole means positive (negative) anomalies in the tropical North Atlantic and negative (positive) anomalies in the tropical South Atlantic. Austral summer and autumn composites for extremes in the Southern Oscillation (El Niño or La Niña) and independently for...
